The delegation of Latvia to the CoR emphasizes the importance of capacity building

The delegation of Latvia to the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) emphasized the importance of capacity building of local government employees in the discussion dedicated to the cohesion policy post 2027.

On October 12 in Brussels (Belgium), at the meeting dedicated to the future of cohesion policy taking place in the European Parliament, Mr Dainis Turlais, Member of the Latvian delegation to the CoR, emphasized that Latvian municipalities have already started preparing proposals for cohesion policy after 2027.

At the meeting "The Future of Cohesion Policy after 2027" jointly organized by the European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions, in which the Commissioner responsible for cohesion and reforms Ms Elisa Ferreira has also participated, Member of the Latvian delegation to the CoR has emphasized the need to talk about cohesion policy as an investment policy of the European Union, not forgetting about investments for building the capacity of our human capital.

"We in Latvian local governements have already started preparing for cohesion policy post 2027. In September, in cooperation with the DG REGIO we have organized the study visit for representatives of Latvian local governments in order to introduce in depth the possibilities of existing European Union funds and programs. And yesterday the Latvian delegation to the European Committee of the Regions had a very frutiful conversation with the representatives of the aforementioned Directorate General about the challenges in the current period and possible solutions in the next one. We have mutually agreed to continue these study visits and meetings, because only together we can promote sustainable development," Mr Turlais revealed to members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission and Members of the European Committee of the Regions.

In the discussion on the future of cohesion policy, Ms Elisa Ferreira, the Commissioner responsible for cohesion and reforms, emphasized that the knowledge and quality of work of the administration are very important: "The technical assistance and information exchange instrument [TAIEX] is currently active in all member states, and technical support is very important, it can also be used by municipalities."
