25th Anniversary of Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments

When a new organization – LALRG, was created, the Scandinavian and especially Danish experience was taken as the basis and adapted to the local conditions. The work invested during the summer and autumn of 1991 was concluded on 15 December in Jūrmala, where leaders from many cities, districts and rural municipalities gathered in the founding congress of a uniting organization – the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments, abbreviated - LALRG. This day is the birthday of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments. Mr. Jānis Bunkšs, being chairman of Jelgava City Council at the time, was elected as the first chairman of LALRG.

Two years later Mr. Jānis Bunkšs handed on the torch to Mr. Andris Jaunsleinis who leads the association already for 23 years. During these years he had managed to sail the "ship" of local governments through various storms and to ensure that LALRG is a force to be taken into account not only in the Latvian political arena but also on European level. The initial setting and the main principle of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments has remained unchanged - to represent the interests of local governments and to strengthen democracy.

“The Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments is not an organization that represents just itself. The Association represents local governments, and the strength of the organization lies in local governments themselves. With the support of local governments on any issue, we also manage to resolve a lot of things. The greatest beneficiaries of our positive solutions is the society of Latvia. Twenty-five years have passed always looking for what we have in common, what unites us and what are our common interests, joint defense. We have never sought what separates us, therefore this joint responsibility for major decisions is of utmost importance. Our strength lies in our diversity, Latvia – it is us!” says Mr. A.Jaunsleinis.

Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments expresses deep gratitude to local governments for their support and jointly achieved results, and to cooperation partners - for successful long-term collaboration!
