The representative of the EC highlights the role of local governments in achieving SDG

On 4 – 5 February representatives of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LALRG) and representatives of Latvian delegation to European Committee of Regions took part in forum “Cities and Regions for Development cooperation” which was organised by European Committee of Regions un European Commission. The Forum was devoted to the involvement of local governments in development cooperation activities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, to jointly promote sustainable development in the European Union and partner countries and to solve challenges for municipalities such as housing, infrastructure, education, security and others.

Stefano Manservisi, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development emphasized the role of a permanent, structured dialogue with municipalities, as most of the Sustainable Development Goals have to be achieved at the municipal level.

Mudīte Priede, Secretary General of the LALRG, pointed out that our Association has been actively involved in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Latvian municipalities for several years already and we are planning upcoming events in this year.

Gints Kaminskis, Deputy Head of the Latvian Delegation to the European Committee of the Regions and Chairman of the LALRG, Mudīte Priede, Secretary General of the LALRG and Ligita Gintere, Member of the Latvian Delegation to the Committee of the Regions and Chairwoman of Jaunpils Municipality Council participated in the forum.
