Baltic Way – 30

On 23 August we honour the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way. It is our nation’s day of remembrance, as on 23 August 1989, more than million people of all three Baltic countries joined hands to create the 600 kilometre long live chain – Baltic Way – from the foot of the Toompea Castle in Tallinn through Latvia and its’ heart Riga City to the Gediminas Tower in Vilnius.

The Baltic Way was an acknowledgment of the long-stifled expectation of independence, which was felt only in hope. It was the flagship of unity and non-violent protest.

Thank you to everyone who joined hands 30 years ago to protect hope and faith of a free and independent Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and to those who would be ready to do so today!

Gints Kaminskis,

Chairman of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments
