The Latvian delegation in Strasbourg participates in discussions on the challenges of migration and pandemics

After a two-year break, this week representatives of the Latvian delegation attended the Plenary Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CLRAE) as well as met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia at the Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe Jānis Kārkliņš.

Chairman of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments Gints Kaminskis, Chairman of Jelgava City Council Andris Rāviņš and Deputy Chairperson of Ludza Municipality Council Ināra Silicka participated in the Plenary Session of the Congress and the meeting of the Chamber of Local Authorities.

During the Plenary Session European delegates discussed and adopted several reports on the application of the European Charter of Local Self-Government in several countries (Spain, the Netherlands, Northern Macedonia, Albania and Cyprus), they analysed migration challenges as well as working conditions for local and regional representatives during the times of hate speech and false news and discussed the impact of the pandemic and future challenges.

Representatives of the Latvian delegation also had the opportunity to meet with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia at the Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe Jānis Kārkliņš and discuss priorities and events that could be organised during the Latvian Presidency in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (17 May 2023 - 15 November 2023).

CLRAE is a pan-European political assembly with 324 elected local and regional representatives and 324 alternates from forty-seven member states of the Council of Europe (CoE).

The Congress promotes decentralization and regionalization processes, as well as cross-border cooperation between local governments and regions. It adopts recommendations and opinions on current issues and submits them to the Committee of Ministers or the Parliamentary Assembly of the CoE, that way Congress advises both institutions of the CoE on matters affecting the activities and interests of local governments and regions represented by the Congress.
