The representative of the European Parliament emphasized the importance of cooperation with local authorities

During the discussions of the Renew Europe political group of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) with Stéphane Séjourné, President of the Renew Europe Group of the European Parliament on 26 January, Gints Kaminskis, Head of the Latvian Delegation to the CoR called for co-operation in drafting the CoR opinion on climate issues in the local governments of the Eastern Partnership countries.

In his address to the representatives of the European Parliament and the CoR, Gints Kaminskis emphasized that this time could be described as a moment to think in particular about the future of Europe, both in finding the best solutions to the energy crisis and developing common understanding how to tackle climate crisis and environmental challenges.

I am therefore particularly pleased to have the opportunity to draw up an opinion at the European Committee of the Regions entitled “Localising the green agenda in the Eastern Partnership”, which will also be an opportunity to identify issues ranging from sustainable mobility to solutions to coastal erosion, on which the European Union and the Eastern Partnership countries’ municipalities could exchange with the good practice experience, making this exchange as mutually complementary and promoting the development of local governments. I would therefore like to invite you and the representatives of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament to work together on this opinion so that, combining our knowledge and experience, we can make it a truly valuable resource for future development cooperation with local authorities in the Eastern Partnership countries,” said Kaminskis.

Addressing the representatives of European local governments, Stéphane Séjourné, President of the Renew Europe Group of the European Parliament emphasized that Europe is now facing the time of political changes which makes cooperation even more important: “Our institutions and also our political groups complement each other ensuring even better representation of people in Europe. For our part, we are ready to work together actively, because Europe is facing time of great changes.” The representative of the European Parliament also emphasized in particular the need to work together on the European Green Deal in order to shape Europe's ecological transformation together and to find ways for each country to achieve its goals, while being cautious on social and economic issues, ambitious regarding environmental goals, yet not hampering growth and industrial production.
