On 14–18 November European Days of Local Solidarity (EDLS) are taking place for the first time in Latvia, organised by the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments and Vidzeme planning region. In the framework of the EDLS representatives of Imereti region (Georgia) are meeting politicians, entrepreneurs, NGOs, youth and schoolchildren from Valmiera city, Rauna and Pārgauja municipality, thus involving representatives of our municipalities in new forms of development cooperation activities.
The activities are officially started with the meeting of the representatives of Imereti region, the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments and the Ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of Latvia Mr. Teimuraz Janjalia in order to discuss the issues of bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Georgia, as well as to look forward to implement further common activities.
Likewise, in the framework of the EDLS the pupils of Straupe primary school and Stalbe secondary school are participating in the drawing contest devoted to Georgia, which is one of the Latvia’s priority countries in development cooperation. 160 drawings are submitted for the contest, and the eight best ones will be awarded during the official ceremony on 17 November with the participation of the representatives of the Embassy of Georgia in Latvia.
Vidzeme planning region and Imereti region have signed cooperation agreement in May 2016, and the activities of the EDLS are good opportunity to implement new development cooperation activities.
The tradition of the EDLS has begun in the municipalities of France and Spain, and this year Latvian municipalities have joined the initiative. The activities are taking place from 12 until 24 November in several local municipalities and regions in France, Italy, Latvia and Spain. The action is implemented in the framework of the project co-funded by the European Commission with the aim to succeed the implementation of development cooperation activities in local and regional municipalities.
