In September 2005, LALRG Representation Office in Brussels was opened in order to be able to influence EU legislation which concerns local and regional government interests. The main objective of LALRG representation is to ensure compliance with the interests of Latvian local and regional governments in the process of elaboration of EU legislation.
LALRG Representation in Brussels and LALRG Foreign Affairs Department serves as secretariat for EU Committee of the Regions which is the voice of cities and regions in the European Union consisting of 344 members and their alternatives from 27 EU Member States. Since 2004 the Latvian delegation is represented at the EU Committee of the Regions by seven members and seven alternatives.
LALRG serves as secretariat for the Latvian delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CLRAE). The Congress operates as a consultative institution to Council of Europe. In the Congress there are 315 members and 315 alternatives - elected councillors of local or regional authorities of CoE member states. Latvia has two mandates at the Chamber of Local Authorities and one mandate at the Chamber of Regions, as well as three alternative members.
